Class Policies:

We love having classes at Sew Katie Jean and inviting a variety of talented instructors into our classroom to teach our customers. In order to keep the high quality of instructors and classes, we have instituted the following class policies:
1) Prepayment holds your place in class.
2) There are no refunds for no-shows.
3) A refund in the form of a store credit will be given for a cancellation made up to 1 week prior to the first date of the first session of the class. There are no refunds on class supplies. 
4) If a cancellation is necessary within 1 week of class, out of courtesy to the instructor  and other participants, please let us know so the instructor can start on time and have the correct number of handouts.
5) Some instructors require a minimum number of students. The minimum number of students will be listed in the class description. If the minimum is not met, participants will be notified at least 3 days prior to the class, and a full refund will be given for the class fee.


Classes & Clubs


Do you want to learn how to sew? Learn how to use your machine? This is the class for you! This is a 4 week class where you learn the basics of sewing and you will make a project each week! The four projects are a draw string bag, a pillowcase, an apron and a zipper pouch. This new class is a prerequisite for our beginning quilting classes. When you finish this class, we also offer Level 2 School of Sewing with 4 more projects. This class is for individuals who are 16 years and older.

Ready for the Fabric Cafe's latest 5 yard and Christmas Book? Holly Jolly 5 Yard Quilts will be the pattern book we are using for this fun Christmas Quilt Class by Betty Kisbey.

Learn to piece and quilt step by step while making a small lap quilt. You will learn lots of techniques from choosing your fabric, to piecing, sandwiching your quilt and quilting it and binding it.

In this class for beginners, you will be building on the skills you learned in the Level 1 class. We will be reviewing the “Best Practices” for piecing a quilt top. There are 9 different blocks and sashing and borders, where more skills will be built upon. This class is a sixth month commitment, and participants will need to keep a credit card on file to be billed monthly for the class. Call the shop to register for this class. Registration is 14.99, which is the cost of the "Jump into Patchwork" Pattern Book. If you already bought this book for Level 1, you will be discounted this fee.

Enchanted Forest is a pattern design created by Jacqueline de Jonge for her new winter Batik Collection by Anthology Fabrics. Trees were her inspiration so she made 18 of them for 6 placemats and one tabke runner. Jacqueline also suggests experinmenting with making this same design in Spring,, Fall, or Halloween colors, as they look pretty in any colorway. We welcome back Tori Johnson, the trained instructor for this class. We have kits for Enchanted Forest with the new winter batik fabric availbale for purchase.

Are you ready to add to your repetroire of free motion quilting skills? Loretta Saenz will be here to instruct you on these beauties that add such style and elegance to your quilts. A supply list will be given upon registration.

This is a 2-day class for intermediate level, free motion quilters. You should have taken at least levels 1 and 2 of free motion quilting at Sew Katie Jean or the equivalent. You will take the next step in free motion quilting using rulers! Loretta Saenz will be the instructor, teaching you how to use 7 different rulers, including the straight ruler, Spin-E-Fex 10 and 11, simple semi-circles, arc template, Crosshair 8.5"-8 point, and a single 5" heart.

Come add to your repertoire of applique methods. Diana Meier will be here to share her expertise once again. She will demonstrate starch applique.

Have you seen those cute "braided" rugs in kitchens of country homes? Those are jelly roll rugs and you can make your very own!

Kinusaiga is a Japanese textile art that involves creating mosaic-like pictures by presing fabric scraps into grooves cut ina backing board. It is described as "painting with farbic." In this class, you will have 4 different designs to choose from: beach, sunflower, Lake Tahoe, and Mountains and Lake. You will receive patterns for all of the designs, but make just one in class.

Linda Ballard is returning for another 1 day class! This one is called "Double Your Pleasure". This is another new creation from Linda Ballard. This quilt looks great with 30's fabric as well as batik. Of course, she will demonstrate new tricks and tips.

This month we are going to get educated on how to best use panels in our quilts and miscellaneous projects. We have so many panels at SKJ, and I'm sure you do too! But, not all panels come squared up and ready to go. Often, the panels come a little "wonky," This evening we will learn by doing and square up a panel under the directio of Laurie Johnson. We will have aseveral great panel books and patterns available for purchase. Dinner is included. We will have a fun night learning together!

Maria Stack, who taught our women's summer dress classes, will be returning to help us construct a quilted jacket! In this class, you will be making a quilted jacket from a sweatshirt foundation and using quality quilting fabric to piece on the sweatshirt to construct a "Beachcomber Jacket".

This is a 12 Month Program. We will travel across the United States as we make this beautiful Road Trip Adventure Quilt. The pattern is by Kate Colleran and Tammy Silvers. Each month has a new block featuring a new technique, with opportunities for you to learn new methods. The finished quilt is 60" inch x 74” inch. Participants will pick up their quilt kit and receive instruction on the current block the first Saturday of each month from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. We are looking forward to another great adventure with you!

This is part 2 of the School of Sewing. It is a 4 part class, continuing on in the book with 4 more projects. In this session, you will learn skills to help you make a zip-it pillow, an essential tote bag, a pleated purse and placemats. The prerequisite for this class is level 1. This class is for individuals who are 16 years and older.

This is a 7 session wool block of the month. Robyn Babb will instruct you on the basics of wool applique using the Sue Spargo method. This block of the month includes a class and a kit. Registration is $155, which includes the pattern book and embellishment thread pack. You will also need to purchase the Sue Spargo Creative Stitching book, as well as Ellana wool threads for whip stitching down the wool pieces.

Have you taken the Intro to Paper Piecing Class, and want something new to try out your new skill on? or do you know how to Foundation Paper Piece, but need a new project? This cute Turkey will be just the project to add some cute Thanksgiving fun to your home. Barbara Carlston will be here to guide you through this cute and slightly challenging pattern.

This class will offer a compilation of several star quilt patterns collected from several sources. We will cover 5-6 patterns each month over 7 months. You are to select the patterns you want to make and put the blocks into your own quilt design. There will be 22 patterns 12” finished and 10 patterns 6” finished. You may choose to make some or all of the patterns.

This is a monthly sew day for those interested in working on their Lori Holt projects. Lori Holt is known for her vintage quilt and sewing patterns. Ashlee Swain is the club coordinator and she will be on hand to help if you have questions. We have reserved the third Tuesday of every month, and there is room for 13 people including Ashlee. You can register/pay online or call the shop at 530-450-5462.

Come join us for our monthly Sew Day to work on our Villa Rosa projects. Not familiar with Villa Rosa patterns? We have a whole collection of patterns for you to choose from that make quilt-making easy. The Club will meet the 1st Wednesday of each month. Karen Mullins will be our host and can help with you with any questions or guidance you need with your Villa Rosa pattern/project.

Bring your hand-sewing, either your wool applique or your embroidery projects, and join Diana Meier for a day of sewing together. Bring your embroidery, applique, binding, hand-quilting or any handwork and come sew with friends. The cost is $10. This club meets the 4th Tuesday of every month.
